Although Argerich has participated in numerous musical partnerships, not to mention her longtime mentoring of young artists, her associations with violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky are surely among the pianist's most substantial and musically rewarding collaborations. The present collection includes all of the Argerich/Kremer and Argerich/Maisky duo recordings for Deutsche Grammophon as originally released and in chronological order, allowing listeners the opportunity to trace each duo's evolution in terms of artistic rapport, sensitivity, risk-taking and the fine tuning of nuance.

Any discussion of Beethoven's violin sonatas (CDs 1, 4, 9 & 10) must address the fact that the composer did not designate these works as being "for violin and piano". For example, the first published edition of the "Spring" Sonata op. 24 from October 1801 reads "Sonate pour le Piano Forte," in large letters, followed in smaller print by "avec un Violon." Similarly, the title-page of the first edition of the "Kreutzer" Sonata op. 47 from April 1805 reads "Sonata per il Piano-forte ed un Violino obligato." None of this should be taken to mean that the violin writing plays "second fiddle" to the piano part, so to speak, but rather that both instruments carry equal weight within the musical discourse.

Argerich and Kremer understood this from the start of their recorded Beethoven encounters, originally intended as part of a series encompassing all the violin sonatas, the music for cello and piano with Maisky, plus the five piano concerti with Giuseppe Sinopoli and the Philharmonia Orchestra (in the end, Argerich and Sinopoli recorded only the First and Second Concertos). Initially Argerich expressed apprehension about recording Beethoven, lest her readings might sound self-conscious under the microphone's objective, unforgiving scrutiny. Yet, during an interview conducted prior to the cycle's final sessions, both Argerich and Kremer spoke of using the recording process to look for the unexpected. "It was an inspired idea to match (Argerich) against a violinist so unpredictable as she is herself," wrote Edward Greenfield in Gramophone, "for though there is nothing `safe' about these interpretations, and not everyone will respond to their sparkling, volatile qualities, the liveness of the experience is undeniable."

Magnificat: 500 Years of Choral Masterworks

Magnificat: 500 Years of Choral Masterworks

This unique, limited-edition boxed set offers 50 CDs of the greatest choral masterpieces of the past 500 years, stretching from Renaissance Masses and the glories of the Baroque and Classical eras through to the major works of the Romantic era and the diversity of the 20th and 21st centuries, all in some of the greatest recordings ever committed to disc.

Western art music owes its very existence to the church: harmony and multi-stranded polyphony derive from the work of church musicians working across Europe 500 years ago, seeking either to expiate sins or glorify and magnify the Almighty with praises: hence the title `Magnificat'.

The performances include an array of stellar artists in exceptional - even legendary - recordings from two of classical music's greatest labels, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon. Citing just some: John Eliot Gardiner's definitive Bach B Minor Mass, and St John Passion, famed Monteverdi Vespers and Brahms Requiem readings; Peter Schreier's Award-winning Mozart Requiem; Paul McCreesh's Haydn Creation and Schütz Vespers; Giulini's Rossini Stabat Mater; Solti's incandescent Verdi Requiem and Mahler Symphony No. 8; Christopher Hogwood's incisive period-instrument Messiah; the acclaimed Walton Belshazzar's Feast with Bryn Terfel; Britten's own definitive War Requiem and Bernstein's interpretation of his Chichester Psalms among many others. Sung texts - including a translation into English where appropriate - are included on a special bonus CD

A 160-page booklet offers detailed tracklistings, full artist and production information including details on recording dates and venues and producers. A 4000-word essay by noted choral music writer Andrew Stewart is provided in English, French and German.

From December on, "Arthur Rubinstein The Complete Album Collection" will be the world's biggest CD edition for a solo artist according to Guinness World Records (TM). It features all the legendary pianist's issued recordings made by RCA Victor between 1940 and 1976, and includes one LP issued on the DECCA label in 1978. The collection also includes the recordings Rubinstein made in England for the English label His Master's Voice (HMV) between 1928 and 1940, most of which were released in the United States by RCA on its Victor label. The collection includes complete studio and live performances, solo, concerto and chamber music repertoire in reproductions of original LP sleeves and labels, the earlier recordings, initially released on 78-rpm discs, appear in three sets with 14 CDs in the edition.

The bonus CDs in this edition (CDs 140-142) contain recordings of his legendary 1961 cycle of ten concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall. They include four works that Rubinstein had never before committed to disc plus two others that represent brand-new additions to his RCA discography.

This edition also boasts the finest sound quality ever bestowed on Arthur Rubinstein's complete recordings. The masters for the principal works in the collection come from the series of Living Stereo SACDs and Japanese XRCDs. All the other recordings are based on masters from the Rubinstein Collection of 1999, technically and sonically refurbished for this edition. In cases where the desired results could not be obtained, Sony Classical has gone back to the original analogue tapes.

The 164-page full-colored hardcover book in landscape format includes new liner notes by Rubinstein biographer Harvey Sachs, photos shot or selected by Arthur Rubinstein's daughter Eva Rubinstein, an essay about the legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concerts, complete discography in alphabetical and chronological order featuring 78s, 45s and LPs and track listings with complete discographical notes, producer names and matrix nos.

The two bonus DVDs are "Rubinstein Remembered", a documentary tracing the great pianist's life from his origins in Łódź, Poland, through his final concert there in 1975, with interviews from family and friends, newsreels, home movies, TV interviews and performance footage. Narrated by Rubinstein's son John Rubinstein and produced by Peter Rosen and the "The Benefit Recital for Israel 1976" recorded at Ambassador College, Pasadena, California on Jan 15, 1975 featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin and Mendelssohn.

The "Arthur Rubinstein Complete Album Collection" consists almost entirely of reproductions of vinyl LPs in their original sleeves. The few exceptions that were only released on CD retain their original CD cover. Thus for the first time ever, music lovers have the opportunity of discovering every single one of Rubinstein's original albums in a single issue.

Your Baby at 5 Months Old

!±8± Your Baby at 5 Months Old

Your baby is 5 months old, and we are almost halfway through baby's first year. By now, your little one is able to differentiate between familiar people and strangers. Physical development is progressing fast, and your baby is learning more and more skills. Five months is an exciting time as you watch this growth and development continue.

Let's take a look at some of the things that your baby can either do or will soon be doing.

Baby Milestones 5 Months

Baby development at 5 months is quite significant. By now, if your little one lies on their tummy, their exercises are quite strenuous, extending arms and legs and arching their back. If the baby lies on their back, they will even be able to lift up their head and shoulders. Your baby is not too far off sitting by this point, and may even be able to sit unsupported for a brief moment. If your baby is already doing these kind of "sit-ups," make sure to put plenty of cushions around, try to stay nearby, and keep a watchful eye as this can be a time of bangs, bumped heads, and tears.

You can encourage your five month baby to develop the appropriate muscles for sitting by putting them on the stomach and placing toys just about within reach. The baby can now stretch out an arm and bring toys into their mouths by themselves, without you needing to do it for them. Just make sure that all toys are safe and baby-friendly, without jagged edges or small parts that can break off and be swallowed, or any peeling paint.

So what's baby eating? You still don't need to give your baby solids unless your health care professional deems it absolutely necessary. Current medical opinion suggests that the time for solid baby food is the age of six months and that the best baby foods at this age are still breast milk or formula. However, this time is drawing closer and you will see that the baby will start to get more interested in what other people are eating. Infants start wriggling a lot more during feeding times, but just be patient and give your baby lots of cuddles and kisses while you try to give them something to eat.

One of your baby's favourite activities will be blowing raspberries and bubbles. Don't worry - this does not mean that they will necessarily grow into an obnoxious toddler that will spit at everybody. It's just a newly acquired skill that will provide some amusement for a short while. Babies tend to repeat new skills and noises as they learn them.

It's possible that the baby knows their own name. You can have a lot of fun calling it and watching them respond. A baby at 5 months will start experimenting with consonants, especially "m" and "b," and you will hear this sound repeated over and over.

Most importantly of all, your baby is beginning to express emotions and to even develop a sense of humour. They will laugh at your funny faces, hold out their arms to you to be picked up, nestle against you to show love, and cry when you leave the room.

Five months is a special baby age, because at this time your little one will express their emotions, show love, or cry, but will not yet have developed more negative attributes, such as insolence, disobedience, or being spoilt. This is a time to really enjoy parenting and nurture your growing love for your child even more.

Jamaican Beef Patty - Another of Jamaica's Fast Food Staples

!±8± Jamaican Beef Patty - Another of Jamaica's Fast Food Staples

In demand globally, Jamaican patties are scrumptious! A genuine Jamaican patty is made of ground beef, usually spiced with onions, pimento (allspice), thyme and the heat of Scotch Bonnet peppers, and then wrapped in a flaky pastry crust with a distinctive yellow-orange color, which comes from various sources like annatto seed, turmeric or food coloring.   They are about 8" long rectangles with a half-moon shape, and there is a distinct horizontal grain running through the crust. Appetizer-sized (or "cocktail") patties can also be found - they make great party food!

Patties are some of the most popular snack foods in Jamaica, equivalent to the popularity of hot dogs and tacos for Americans. And while beef patties are consistently the most popular, you will also find chicken, fish, lobster, shrimp, cheese, vegetable, ackee and even tofu patties. Patties can be baked (prevalent in the English-speaking Caribbean islands) or fried (prevalent in the Spanish-speaking islands and Latin America).  And, even though the idea of vegetarian patties seems like just a health food craze, these too are authentically Jamaican because of the Rastafarian dietary laws.

Based on the historical British influences in Jamaica, some think patties could have derived from the British meat pasty (with the 'a' pronounced as in "cat"). Cornish miners carried pasties with them for lunch deep in the tin mines of Cornwall, U.K. The traditional pasty was made of diced steak, onion and potato, all wrapped in a dense, folded crust. Covered in dirt and mine debris, the pasty was something easy for miners to hold and eat - the perfect "to-go" food. They could eat some for breakfast and save the rest for lunch.  And, when baked, pasties could stay warm for long periods of time. If kept close to the body, they could help the miner stay warm. Apparently pasties were also quite popular with miners elsewhere, particularly in Montana.

Whatever its origins, the Jamaican patty has worldwide relatives! It is quite similar to the Spanish, South American and Latin American empanada, the Italian calzone, the Arabic, North African and Turkish sambousa, the Eastern European and Yiddish knish, and even the well-known American microwavable Hot Pocket, produced by Nestlé. The patty is truly an international food design!

Jamaicans eat patties from early morning to late at night. Many prefer a patty wrapped in coco bread, named because it's a large, soft, sweet bun that you need to break open like a coconut (it contains no coconut). They claim the coco bread helps soak up the juice and spiciness of the patty.

The two largest patty competitors in Jamaica are Tastee Patties (born in the 1960s) and Juici Patties (born in the 1980s), both with outlets all over Jamaica, and great debates ensue over whose product is better. Information about both can be found on the Internet along with menus. Today, patties made by various companies are widely distributed, including internationally. Many U.S. markets carry frozen patties (primarily Florida and New York), and they are widely available in the U.K., Canada and the Philippines. If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Brooklyn, New York, look for them in restaurants too.

Don't ever let a delightful, authentic Jamaican patty cross your path without sampling one!
